Case Study

Safety-Driven Ballistic Plates Inventory and Compliance Project for the Netherlands Ministry of Defence (NL MoD)

New inspection requirements drive the need for a custom data solution

Project Overview: Due to new health and safety regulations, KPU (the clothing and personal equipment unit of the NL MoD) was required to conduct X-ray inspections of all ballistic plates held across the inventory to identify any damage and ensure the safety of soldiers. Historically, however, the NL MoD managed ballistic plates in bulk quantities rather than as individual assets. To address these regulatory requirements and improve asset tracking and accountability, KPU invested in a new X-ray machine at their facility. Additionally, individual asset data was needed to integrate the ballistic plates into the SAP/S4-HANA system. KPU partnered with Camcode Global to develop a solution that significantly enhanced visibility, traceability, and compliance with updated safety regulations.

Challenges

Because ballistic plates had been managed in bulk quantities within the SAP system rather than as individual items, the team needed to solve the challenges of:

Identifying specific plates
Maintaining Confidence
in inventory holdings and their precise locations

Camcode Global’s Role

Camcode Global captured and recorded essential data for all 75,000 ballistic plates. This process included

Capturing OEM data, including manufacturer details and production dates.

Recording batch order details to maintain traceability of plate production runs.

Applying Unique Item Identifier (UID) marks to each ballistic plate, ensuring adherence to NL MoD’s UID policy, CDS-751.

Camcode Global provided KPU with a comprehensive report containing all recorded data, including the UIDs, to use for migrating the information into the SAP/S4-HANA system. This data migration supports KPU’s efforts to ensure accurate, individualised asset management of the ballistic plates.

Key Benefits

Effective ITV facilitates the seamless monitoring of assets across global supply chains. Integrating UID marking, advanced tracking software, and NATO-standard systems such as LOGFAS enhances coordination among NATO member states. The above framework positions NATO operations for:

  • Regulatory Compliance: The project ensures that KPU complies with new health and safety regulations through proper inspection and tracking of each ballistic plate.
  • Enhanced Visibility and Traceability: With UID marking and data capture, KPU can now track each ballistic plate individually, improving inventory confidence and operational oversight.
  • Improved Management in SAP/S4-HANA: The integration of the ballistic plates into SAP/S4-HANA enhances data management, supporting better decision making and streamlined asset tracking throughout their lifecycle.
By addressing both regulatory and operational challenges, Camcode Global’s collaboration with KPU has enabled more accurate, reliable, and compliant management of NL MoD’s ballistic plates, ensuring soldier safety and operational readiness
